Center for Honoring Ancient Office Solutions Inducts Email and Spreadsheets into Hall of Fame
Things-of-the-past enthusiast invites office workers everywhere to look back, not forward
BARSTOW, Calif., April 1, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The Center for Honoring Ancient Office Solutions (CHAOS), which is dedicated to promoting the awareness and use of such legendary office tools as the Rolodex, carbon paper and the ten-key calculator, today announced that it is inducting electronic mail and spreadsheets into its Hall of Fame. The announcement was made by Center founder, president, treasurer, and curator Burt Younker in a star-studded event held at the Center's headquarters.
"We don't take these selections lightly," said Younker in his remarks at the event. "We took our time and really asked the tough questions. Did electronic mail and spreadsheets, which are still fairly new in my book, really deserve to stand among the likes of the rotary phone and the fax machine? In the end, what won us over was the ability of email and spreadsheets to force office workers to slow down and take their time on their work – see the big picture, if you know what I mean."
Younker also spent considerable time addressing the negative effects of so-called "work management solutions" on the modern workplace. Mentioning Workfront, the foremost purveyor of work management solutions, specifically, he linked the use of these solutions to projects being completed at "dangerously high speeds" and the dismantling of the organizational fabric of the office, which has previously relied on a certain degree of inefficiency to provide a sense of well-being to office workers.
Younker continued, "Do you know how much effort went into creating the electronic mail and spreadsheet programs? Many, many man-years! These aren't one of those new cloud applications. We're talking real calculating and communication power here, people."
For the 15-plus attendees at the event, Younker's address and the surrounding festivities made an undeniable impression.
"I spend, like, a lot of time in my inbox," said Virgie Hickock, assistant to the receptionist of the mayor of Barstow. "Like a ton. So I guess it's important, sorta."
"I can't believe I was able to attend this event in person," said Gerald Silva, head of building maintenance. "I remember the first time I used email back in 1992. I think it's so cool that it looks pretty much the same today. Definitely cuts down on the learning curve."
