Charter Parents Tell Sen. Vincent Hughes: "You Do Not Speak For Us"
PHILADELPHIA, May 10, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Acting on behalf of charter school families citywide, the grassroots coalition Educational Opportunities for Families (EOF) today sent a letter urging State Sen. Vincent Hughes to stop "pitting charters against District schools" and called on Hughes to lead in finding new ways for quality charter schools and traditional public schools to co-exist.
The letter, signed by EOF parents Ronnesha Boone, Toya Algarin, and William Jackson on behalf of the entire EOF organization, which includes more than 1,000 charter school parents as members and engages more than 5,000 charter parents a month on education issues, took Hughes to task for telling Pennsylvania House Speaker Mike Turzai last week to "stay the hell out of Philadelphia" with respect to education funding issues.
"Respectfully, telling the Speaker of the House to 'stay the hell out of Philadelphia' may grab headlines and win political points with the teachers' union, but it does nothing to improve education for our children," the parents wrote, adding that "you do not speak for us" when arguing against measures that would promote the survival and expansion of quality charter schools.
"We all agree that Philadelphia public schools need more funding," the parents wrote. "But your comments about charters penalizing District schools is wrong and unfair to the thousands of families – including many who live in your senatorial district – who have chosen charter schools as the best option to give their children a quality education."
The parents called on Hughes and other leaders "on both sides to figure out a future in which quality charters and District schools can co-exist. We hope that you will take this letter to heart, Senator, because it is long past time for both sides to talk with each other instead of screaming at each other."
The full letter is attached to this release.
