CHET Direct-Sold 529 College Savings Program Launches Educational Site in Spanish
Site to provide easy access to general information on 529 college savings plans
HARTFORD, Conn., Dec. 8, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- State Treasurer Denise L. Nappier has announced that a web site for the Connecticut Higher Education Trust (CHET) direct-sold 529 college savings plan is now available in Spanish. The site, www.aboutchet-espanol.com provides the Spanish-speaking community in Connecticut with information about saving for college and the 529 college savings plan.
"The launch of this web site is part of our efforts to more effectively communicate with the growing Spanish-speaking population about the long-term benefits of a college education, and how to save to achieve that goal," said Nappier. The U.S. Census Bureau projects that from 1995 to the year 2025, the Hispanic population in Connecticut will increase from 7.5 to 15.4 percent of the state's population. "Through this web site, Hispanic families will find basic questions and answers about tax-advantaged 529 college savings plans, the benefits of saving for college early, and the ease and affordability of direct-sold 529 college savings plans," Nappier added.
In 2011 the site will be expanded and will contain more specific information about CHET and the tax advantages and low fees available to families who invest in the direct-sold program. Marketing materials in Spanish will be available for distribution at that time.
CHET continues to offer Connecticut taxpayers the opportunity to take advantage of the state income tax deduction on 529 plan contributions made before December 31, 2010.
The CHET direct-sold 529 college savings plan was established in 1997 and has grown to $1.38 billion in assets with more than 96,000 accounts (as of October 31, 2010). Connecticut Treasurer Denise L. Nappier serves as Trustee of CHET and has the statutory responsibility to manage the program. Spanish-speaking representatives are available to assist at 1-888-802-4717.
