BETHESDA, Md., June 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Chindex International, Inc. (NASDAQ: CHDX, "Chindex" or the "Company"), an American healthcare company providing services in China through the operations of United Family Healthcare, a network of private hospitals and affiliated ambulatory clinics, today announced the official opening of its Beijing United Family Rehabilitation Hospital ("BJU Rehab Hospital"), one of the latest development projects of the United Family Healthcare ("UFH") network. On June 19, 2013, the Company held a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony, which was attended by distinguished guests including Mr. Gary Locke, the U.S. Ambassador to People's Republic of China, representatives from national and municipal governments, international and domestic medical associations, insurance partners and other business associates.
The world-class 100-bed, 172,000-square-foot facility is located adjacent to a large natural park in east Beijing. The BJU Rehabilitation Hospital aims to restore function and quality of life to patients recovering from serious injuries, surgeries or debilitating illnesses in a broad array of areas by providing a team approach using evidence-based medicine and modern technology in a comfortable and nurturing environment. Main rehabilitation services provided include neurological rehabilitation, orthopedic rehabilitation, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, women's postnatal rehabilitation and pediatric rehabilitation. Additional services include physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, cognitive rehabilitation, prosthetics and orthotics services, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy and traditional Chinese medicine. The facility features state-of-the-art amenities including an ICU ward, an extensive hydrotherapy pool area, the latest physical therapy equipment, hyperbaric and atmospheric oxygen chambers, a cardiopulmonary stress test system and multi-directional maxi sky patient movement systems, among others. As part of the UFH network, the BJU Rehab Hospital will offer patients referrals with the rest of the UFH network, as well as with the wider medical community and will provide convenient direct billing options with well-established international insurance companies.
Ambassador Locke spoke at the opening ceremony, "United Family's new rehabilitation facility is absolutely beautiful. It will attract patients from throughout Asia and is a great example of how the U.S. and China can partner to provide high quality healthcare and advanced medical services."
Dr. Joel DeLisa, Honorary President of the BJU Rehab Hospital and former president of the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitative Medicine, also spoke at the opening ceremony, "The BJU Rehab Hospital is home to a team of multidisciplinary physicians, therapists and supporting staff, who are dedicated to providing evidence-based medicine and patient-centered care to help our patients recover and return to a high-quality life as soon as possible. As part of the expanding UFH network, it will offer the highest standards of premium healthcare and carry forward our core values of care, achievement, respect, and encouragement. The BJU Rehab Hospital follows and attempts to surpass the highest international quality standards recognized by the world's most well-regarded rehabilitation accrediting agency, the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), and seeks to become China's first CARF accredited facility."
Roberta Lipson, President and CEO of Chindex, said, "We are pleased to open the BJU Rehab Hospital, which officially completes United Family Healthcare's ability to offer a full array of healthcare services by adding rehabilitation medicine to its existing offerings which range from prevention, to primary care, to acute therapeutic medical and surgical interventions, and home health. With China's rapid growth in the aging population and disposable income for healthcare services, we believe the BJU Rehab Hospital will fill an existing void in China's healthcare system by meeting the increasing demands from patients who seek world class, local healthcare service and support for their recovery back to productive daily life. We are confident we will not only steadily ramp up the facility to its full capacity and add tangible contribution to the UFH network, our new Rehabilitation Hospital also allows us to leverage synergies with the surgical units in our expanded BJU main campus and capitalize on our strong ties to the relevant surgical services in hospitals throughout China, including the public system.
"Finally, we would like to thank the U.S. Embassy, Chinese government, various business associates and our development and operational teams for their support for this significant accomplishment and important milestone in our healthcare mission. We look forward to deepening our working relationships and together delivering international-standard healthcare services to those in need in China."
