CHPA Statement On New Alabama Meth Law
New Measure Strengthens Effort to Stop Illegal Production
WASHINGTON, Aug. 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA) released the following statement today regarding Alabama's new anti-meth law. Portions of the law, including a measure that prohibits individuals with meth-related convictions on their criminal records from buying nonprescription medicines containing pseudoephedrine, took effect August 1. Full implementation of the law is scheduled for January 2013.
"Alabama's new anti-meth law provides law enforcement with even better tools to make more arrests and put more meth dealers behind bars," said Elizabeth Funderburk, senior director of media relations and communications for CHPA. "Alabama already has a proven system in place that is blocking thousands of potentially illegal pseudoephedrine sales each year and leading to numerous arrests. The new law will make the technology even stronger."
The new law (House Bill 363), which was signed by Governor Robert Bentley this past April, significantly improves Alabama's methamphetamine enforcement laws by implementing a drug offender registry, stricter penalties for meth-related crime and enhancements to the state's real-time, stop-sale technology. The law also includes a provision, which went into effect on June 6th,that makes it illegal for Mississippi residents to purchase pseudoephedrine products in Alabama. (Mississippi requires a doctor's prescription for pseudoephedrine products.) HB 363 and its companion legislation in the Alabama Senate were authored by Rep. Blaine Galliher and Sen. Bill Holtzclaw, respectively.
"By choosing balanced solutions that address the root causes of Alabama meth production problem, Alabama leaders are ensuring that honest taxpayers do not have to face unnecessary and costly burdens. Unlike other states that have proposed prescription-only requirements, Alabama lawmakers have shown that cracking down on meth production and protecting consumer access don't have to be mutually exclusive goals."
