DURHAM, N.C., Nov. 7, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Leading Christian higher education resource, Christian Universities Online (http://www.christianuniversitiesonline.org/), has published a ranking of the Top Ten Psychology Degree Programs 2017 (http://www.christianuniversitiesonline.org/top-10-psychology-degree-programs-2017/?rank_page=1). Azusa Pacific University of Azusa, California, claimed the top spot on the list. Liberty University of Lynchburg, Virginia placed second in the ranking, and LeTourneau University located in Longview, Texas, placed third.
Other schools making the list include (in alphabetical order):
College of the Ozarks - Point Lookout, Missouri
Faulkner University - Montgomery, Alabama
Messiah College - Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania
Northwest University - Kirkland, Washington
Simpson, University - Redding, California
Wheaton College - Wheaton, Illinois
Whitworth University - Spokane, Washington
This ranking began by comparing all colleges and universities that are either members of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) or be member eligible. Publicly available data for each school was gathered and compared in the following areas: 1) number of undergraduate and graduate degree programs in psychology; 2) faculty-to-student ratio; 3) percent of full-time beginning undergraduates receiving grant or scholarship aid; 4) selectivity; 5) overall retention rate; and 6) overall graduation rate. Weights were assigned to each of these categories with the category of the number of degree programs having a slightly higher weight than the other categories. Lastly, an overall score was calculated for each school.
Anna-Rebekah Orr, editor at Christian Universities Online, explains that the goal of the ranking is to highlight schools that excel in their educational offerings in the field of psychology, counseling, or a related area. These schools are doing the important work of preparing highly trained professionals in the field of psychology within a faith context that will inform their work as they go on to the career of their choosing. Orr says, "Psychology is a very broad field that attracts students with a wide range of interests, including counseling, mental health, family and marriage therapy, and clinical research. There is a constituency of prospective students who do not want to set aside their Christian beliefs to study psychology but also do not want to compromise on quality of education. This ranking puts the spotlight on departments at Christian institutions that have a reputation for excellence and accommodate a wide range of interests. Whatever one's career goals, these schools are committed to a highly rigorous academic and professional standard. Over and above academic excellence, these are programs that uphold a commitment to a Christian worldview and are rooted in a faith perspective. Students who are seeking such a program will find this ranking helpful as they conduct their search."
