For this ranking, Christian Universities Online first identified all institutions that are members of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) or could be considered member eligible. Publicly available data in six different categories was then gathered and compared. Of these six categories, slightly higher weight was given to the category that assessed the number of undergraduate and graduate music degrees offered by each school (with more favor given to schools that offered a larger number of programs). The remaining five categories were given equal weight. These are as follows: 1) faculty-to-student ratio; 2) percent of full-time beginning undergraduates receiving grant or scholarship aid; 3) selectivity; 4) overall retention rate and; 5) overall graduation rate. Lastly, each data set was standardized and an overall score was calculated. While this ranking presents the top ten scores, there are many other schools with high quality music programs in our pool of schools. Christian Universities Online welcomes prospective students to contact them with questions about any music degree programs at Christian schools that are not listed here.
Anna-Rebekah Orr, site editor, states that the goal of the ranking is to highlight schools that excel in their educational offerings for the study of music. She adds, "When considering any specialty, it is important to weigh as many factors as possible. Christian Universities Online has researched, compiled, and reviewed a wide range of data to assist students and parents with this decision-making process. Prospective students of music--whether interested in performance, music education, worship, or perhaps becoming a specialist within the Christian music industry--will find this list a helpful guide. Christian schools that excel in music play an important role in setting high standards for emerging musicians. Programs that offer excellence in the arts within a Christian context are attractive to students who want to develop their talent to a high standard within a context that also supports and develops their faith. Our hope is that this list will help students find a program that suits their needs."
