Clean Tech Leader Praises Maryland Solar Company's Move to California
SACRAMENTO, Calif., Oct. 13, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The decision by MEMC Electronic Materials Inc.'s (WFR) solar-power development unit SunEdison to move its headquarters from Maryland to the Bay Area city of Belmont was applauded today by Californians for Clean Energy and Jobs Network co-chair Tom Steyer.
"California continues to attract jobs and investment in clean energy because of its forward-thinking policies," said Steyer. "SunEdison's move is more evidence that the industry is strong and our state has created the environment to attract growing companies that will help us meet our goal of getting 33 percent of our renewable energy by 2020."
SunEdison, builds, owns and operates solar-power plants and rooftop generators using solar panels. It uses panels made by its parent company and also buys panels from other manufacturers for its projects.
"We do think that California is the epicenter for solar," SunEdison President Carlos Domenech said in an interview with Dow Jones Newswires.
Gov. Jerry Brown, who attended the opening of SunEdison's new headquarters, also praised the company's relocation.
"California is open for business, we're the innovative state and we're going to invest in solar and make California not only the national leader, which it already is, we're going to make it the world leader, and we're going to do that with a company like this," Brown said.
