Summary
India is endowed with vast mineral deposits, including coal, iron ore, bauxite, manganese, copper, lead, zinc, and limestone. The country's mining industry has great potential and provides basic raw materials to various industries, including steel and power. India had 308.8 Billion tonnes (Bnt) of coal resources comprised of proved, indicated, and inferred resources of 138.1Bnt, 139.1Bnt, and 31.6Bnt, respectively, as of March 2016. The majority of these are spread across the Indian states of Jharkhand, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh, which collectively accounted for 69% of the country's total coal resources.
India had 44.6Bnt of lignite reserves, which are largely found in Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Pondicherry, and Jammu and Kashmir. The country broadly classifies coal grades based on the ash and moisture content, and gross calorific value (GCV). India's estimated coal production of 765Mt ranked the country as the third-largest coal producer globally in 2016. Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Telangana are among the top-five coal producing states, collectively accounting for 87.3% of the country's coal production during 2015.
By 2021, the country's coal production is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.3%. India was third-largest consumer of coal in 2016. Coal is predominantly consumed by the domestic power sector, while steel and cement industries account for a nominal share.
India's mining industry is governed by the Ministry of Mines, the Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) and the Geological Survey of India (GSI). The Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill 2015 - which came into effect on January 12 of that year - and the Mines Act 1952, together with the rules and regulations framed under them, constitute the basic laws governing the Indian mining sector.
