Codesmith Students Garner National Praise for Open-Source Contributions
High Calibre Projects Gain Recognition from Thousands of Engineers Including the Creator of JavaScript
LOS ANGELES, April 26, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Codesmith graduates have recently released open-source projects that showcase their potential of making an impact on a global scale. These projects not only show the calibre of Codesmith students upon graduation, but also make significant contributions to the community of software engineers across the world.
"Each one of these projects has made a major impact on the open source and web community. I am incredibly proud of the contributions from each of the teams behind YouDescribe, WebDSP, Offramp, Overvue and Reactide."
-Will Sentance, Codesmith CEO
One project is YouDescribe which was built to assist the visually impaired in watching YouTube. Dr. Joshua Miele approached a team about taking the virtually obsolete version of the project that exists today, and rebuilding it from the ground up. YouDescribe is now built with the latest technologies and JavaScript frameworks to make it more powerful than ever before, and has the potential to assist over 300 million visually impaired individuals across the world.
"Currently it's not possible for a blind or low vision individual to use YouTube. We were able to build a new, viable solution for this problem and allow the visually impaired access to YouTube content."
-Curt Toppel, Software Engineer for YouDescribe
Reactide is an Integrated Development Environment built for React, which intends to make React development easier for Software Engineers. The project has been widely praised, amassing over 6,000 stars on GitHub. Reactide is a testament to Codesmith graduates' ability to build helpful and innovative tools for the open-source community, and thrive as software engineers on a global scale.
"It was exciting to see that many of the hiring partners already heard about Reactide before the event. Their enthusiasm for open source developer tools was a strong point in the hiring partner's interest in Codesmith grads."
-Mark Marceto, Software Engineer at Reactide
Additionally, Codesmith students built groundbreaking new tools for upcoming technologies such as WebDSP that gave greater power to developers to utilize media content when building with the rising power of WebAssembly. While OverVue and Offramp both built state management applications that allow for easier control over state in Vue and React applications, respectively. These projects have also garnered attention from online publications such as Infoworld as well as Brendan Eich, the creator of JavaScript.
"Building OverVue showed me that I can not only understand complex topics but also create new and exciting tools that benefit the wider developer community."
-Jon Mcalpine, Software Engineer at OverVue
