CollegeAmerica Meets the Needs of the Growing Number of Nontraditional Students Report Indicates 75 Percent of College Students Balance Work, Family and School

SALT LAKE CITY, Oct. 30, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- CollegeAmerica, a leading provider of online and on-ground higher education, and its sister schools, Stevens-Henager College and California College San Diego, are providing options to help the growing number of nontraditional college students who balance work and family responsibilities while pursuing advanced training and degrees.

According to a study recently conducted by Complete College America, seventy-five percent of today's college students are considered nontraditional, which means they juggle families, jobs and school while commuting to class.

The remaining 25 percent fit the traditional guidelines. They are first-time college students who attend full time, choose residential colleges and have most of their bills paid by their parents, according to the U.S. Department of Education. The report examined more than 10 million students and analyzed data from 33 states using the Complete College America/National Governors Association Common Completion Metrics.

More students are holding down jobs and working more hours than ever before and need a flexible schedule to complete their education. Some have children in the home, others need to work full time while pursuing higher education, and others are looking to upgrade their employment through an advanced degree.

"CollegeAmerica realizes that the majority of today's college students do not fit the mold of a typical college freshman – rather they bring additional life circumstances that require more flexibility and options," said Eric Juhlin, CEO. "Our educational model helps our students balance priorities and for many, this is the only way they can achieve their academic goals."

CollegeAmerica is committed to providing convenient career educational programs that meet the needs of today's busy adults. It offers degree programs in business, healthcare, graphic arts and computers. Students can choose from online, on-campus and hybrid programs that fit the lifestyle and circumstances of each student.

CollegeAmerica offers specific resources to meet those needs, such as:

  • A partnership with the Idaho Education Network that allows college students in rural Idaho to participate in classes at the Boise and Idaho Falls campuses via a closed-circuit television network.
  • A revolving class schedule offered in modules rather than semesters, with new classes starting every month.
  • A full catalog of online course offerings.
  • GED tutoring for community members who have not yet completed high school graduation requirements.
