Executive Summary

Colombia's government continues to wage its campaign against insurgent organisations and criminal gangsinvolved in narcotics production and trafficking. The employment of the country's armed forces againstthese threats has yielded some successes, although it appears that the state is still a long way from defeatingMarxist-inspired guerrilla groups such as Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC). Thisorganisation has used a combination of attacks on Colombia's law-enforcement organisations and thecivilian population, along with kidnappings, extortion and drug trafficking to raise revenue.FARC's attacks are also having a negative effect on Colombia's critical national infrastructure. Armedactions against oil installations risk having a detrimental effect on crude oil production. This could derail thegovernment's goal of increasing production to over 1.5mn barrels a day by 2015. In addition, FARC hasattacked power stations, disrupting life in some of Colombia's conurbations. Economic activity wasdisrupted by one of Colombia's criminal gangs in 2012, which ordered a general strike in one of thenorthern cities in retaliation for the death of its leader during a gunfight with police.BMI Industry View 7Colombia Q2 2013 7SWOT 8Defence 8Security 9Political 10Economic 11Business Environment 12Industry Forecast 13Defence Trade, Expenditure and Armed Forces 13Armed Forces 13Table: Colombia's Armed Forces, 2000-2009 ('000 personnel, unless otherwise stated) 13Table: Colombia's Available Manpower For Military Services, 2010-2017 (aged 16-49, unless otherwise stated) 13Defence Expenditure 14Table: Colombia's Government Defence Expenditure, 2010-2017 14Table: Colombia's Defence Expenditure Scenario - Changing % Of GDP, 2010-2017 (US$mn) 15Defence Trade 16Table: Colombia's Defence Exports, 2010-2017 (US$mn) 16Table: Colombia's Defence Imports, 2010-2017 (US$mn) 17Table: Colombia's Trade Balance, 2010-2017 (US$mn) 17Macroeconomic Forecasts 18Table: Colombia - Economic Activity 22Industry Risk Reward Ratings 23Security Risk Reward Ratings 23Table: Latin America Security Ratings 23Table: Latin America State Vulnerability To Terrorism Ratings 24Market Overview 25Colombia Market Overview 25Industry Trends And Developments 28Political Overview 28Table: Political Overview 31Security Overview 36Company Profile 42Industria Militar (Indumil) - Q2 2013 42Regional Overview 44Political Risk Analysis 44Global Industry Overview 66Global Political Outlook 66Eurozone 66Iran War Risks Rising In 2013 67Syrian Conflict To Continue, Post-Assad 68Caucasus At Risk Of Armenia-Azerbaijan War 68Korean Peninsula Facing Mixed Outlook 69Asia's Maritime Island Disputes 69Table: Election Timetable, 2013 70Methodology 74How We Generate Our Industry Forecasts 74Defence Industry 74Sources 75
