Committee For Economic Development Launches New Blog on Federal Budget
BACKINTHEBLACKBLOG.ORG WORKS TO GET LONG-STALLED DEBATE MOVING
WASHINGTON, March 14, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Committee for Economic Development (CED), the non-partisan organization of some 200 senior corporate leaders and university presidents that for the past 70 years has worked at the highest levels to address many of the nation's most pressing economic and social issues, today launched its first-ever blog – www.backintheblackblog.org – to create an online community of those concerned about the federal deficit and national debt that will increase the pressure on policymakers to act to solve the problem.
"Breaking through the partisan roadblock in Washington to stop our nation's crushing buildup of debt requires new efforts on the part of all Americans. The United States cannot afford to waste another year as it slides toward financial crisis. Our Trustees are prepared to use this blog to lead the discussion that our elected officials so far have been ducking," stated CED President Charles Kolb.
The blog will be a significant departure for CED in terms of content, style, and communications strategy. Although a central part of CED's core mission since it began in 1942 has been sound fiscal and economic policy, it previously has always emphasized persuasion rather than building a community of interest. Sound proposals from the Bipartisan Policy Center's "Domenici/Rivlin" Debt Reduction Task Force, the "Simpson/Bowles" National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, and efforts by the "Gang of Six," which were developed in part with help from CED, went no where last year because of partisan roadblocks in Washington. CED's blog will serve as a resource for points of bipartisan compromise as well as a consistent source of analysis on new economic data.
Posts on the Back in the Black blog will be written by a rotating group of senior CED executives including Charles Kolb and Senior Vice President for Policy and former Chief Economist for the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, Joe Minarik. Guest bloggers will include Erskine Bowles, who co-chaired President Obama's National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform; CED Trustee Bowman Cutter, who previously served as deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget during the Carter administration and as deputy director of the National Economic Council during the Clinton administration; Mark Greene, Ph.D. Chair, Advisory Council, FICO; and Joseph Kasputys, Founder and former CEO of IHS Global Insight and co-chairman of CED's Fiscal Health Initiative.
Over the past year CED's business leaders have repeatedly raised concerns about partisan gridlock over the soaring public debt and its threat to the long-term health of the economy. To illustrate the consequences of inaction, CED documented possible outcomes of escalating debt. CED will use its new blog to push political leaders to solid, bipartisan progress.
