CINCINNATI, Oct. 17, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Communicare, one of the nation's largest privately owned skilled nursing companies, will host educational programs, awareness efforts and more in honor of its first Purple With Purpose Day on October 28. The first annual Purple With Purpose Day was established to help build awareness and inspire advocacy around Alzheimer's and dementia related diagnosis. The events are intended to kick off the official start of Alzheimer's Awareness month in November.
More than 5 million Americans live with Alzheimer's disease, including an estimate 200,000 under age 65. By 2050, as many as 16 million are expected to have the disease. CommuniCare keeps memories alive through programs and their Connections Units, specific to serving Alzheimer's and Dementia patients.
Connections Units serve the Alzheimer's and Dementia population with purpose and dignity. Expertly trained team members offer therapeutic recreation, leisure activities and grooming skills to help each resident feel connected and independent. Some units even have Snoezelen Rooms, specially designed spaces that offer soothing sound, touch and light to calm residents.
"Life is truly about connections,'' said Isaac Rosedale, Executive Vice President of Communicare.
"Whether we are connecting with a person, a book, a movie or song, the connection is there because of a memory we have of an important experience. Alzheimer's and dementia not only rob us of those memories, but take away the connections they create."
All 50+ Communicare facilities will participate in the Longest Connection contest to build the longest memory link with personal memories written on each one. Links will sell for $1 at CommuniCare's facilities and the money raised will go to the Alzheimer's Association.
Communicare will be offering professional and community education events as well as internal events for residents, families and employees to promote the advocacy, support and awareness of Alzheimer's and related dementia diagnosis.
CommuniCare Family of Companies is a privately held, multi-faceted health care management company, which owns and manages more than 50 world-class nursing and rehabilitation centers, specialty care centers and assisted living communities throughout Missouri, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
