Congressman Fattah Announces Neuroscience Grants for The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA, June 11, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA), the senior Democratic Appropriator for federal science agencies and a Congressional leader for neuroscience research, announces that The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia will receive two neuroscience related grants totaling $214,272.
"These grants will enable The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia to continue its cutting edge research and treatment in the areas of concussion, cognitive impairment in youth and other critically important fields of brain injury research," Fattah said. "CHOP is at the top of the list of our nation's leading hospitals for children, and a key player in Philadelphia's vibrant research community."
Fattah announced these latest neuroscience grants to The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia: $195,662 for a program that looks beyond catastrophic brain injuries to mild traumatic brain injury -fundamental research to advance new frontiers in injury prevention, and $18,610 for a Neurobiology of Stress Workshop.
These federal funds will supplement an impressive research portfolio at this flagship institution. Currently CHOP scientists are exploring connections between diet and improved cognitive functioning in concussed patients. Fattah visited the Akiva Cohen Laboratory in December to meet with researchers and hear about these advances.
Fattah is the senior Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee's Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and related agencies, which oversees appropriations for the National Science Foundation and other science agencies. He is also the author of the Fattah Neuroscience Initiative, an interagency working group housed at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy to explore and coordinate the current state of federally funded neuroscience.
