Consumer Financial Protection Outreach Schedule for August to Focus on Protecting Senior Citizens
HARRISBURG, Pa., July 18, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Education and outreach staff from the Department of Banking and Securities will be holding outreach presentations for senior citizens across the commonwealth during the month of August to promote financial capability as part of Governor Tom Wolf's Consumer Financial Protection Initiative. The department will also hold outreach events for members of service provider groups and the general public.
For Senior Citizens
Department staff will be participating in several senior citizen expos sponsored by members of the General Assembly, including:
- Rep. Martin Causer's Senior Expo at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Sports and Fitness Gymnasium, 300 Campus Drive in Bradford (McKean County) on August 4 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM
- Rep. David Millard's Senior Expo at Espy Fire Hall, Tenny and 3rd Streets in Bloomsburg (Columbia County) on August 9 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM
- Rep. Parke Wentling's Senior Expo at St. John's the Evangelist Parish Center, 1001 Main Street East in Girard (Erie County) on August 31 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM
- Rep. Steve McCarter's Senior Expo at Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel, 8339 Old York Road in Elkins Park (Montgomery County) on August 31 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM
The presentation "Banking Basics" – an overview of how banks and credit unions work, including differences among types of accounts, what to do if you have past banking issues, and questions you should ask before opening an account – and the presentation "Creating a Spending Plan" – which outlines the differences between wants and needs; setting "SMART" goals; creating a spending plan; and putting the plan into action – will be combined together and offered at the following location:
- Green Diamond Place at 379 Mellon Avenue in Baden (Beaver County) on August 10 from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM (open to residents of property and guests ONLY)
- Fifth Avenue Commons at 1205 Fifth Avenue in McKeesport (Allegheny County) on August 10 from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM
- Parkview Towers at 111 Caroline Street in Munhall (Allegheny County) on August 11 from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM
The presentation "Avoiding Scams and ID Theft" – which helps consumers protect themselves from financial scams as well as informs victims of scams on how to get help – will be offered at the following locations:
- Carbondale Active Older Adult Center at 66 N. Church Street in Carbondale (Lackawanna County) on August 15 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM
- West Side Active Older Adult Center at 1004 Jackson Street in Scranton (Lackawanna County) on August 15 from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM
- Mid Valley Active Older Adult Center at 310 Church Street in Jessup (Lackawanna County) on August 16 from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM
- South Side Active Older Adult Center at 425 Alder Street in Scranton (Lackawanna County) on August 16 from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM
- Grandview Manor at 4210 Davidson Avenue in Erie (Erie County) on August 30 from 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM
For General Audiences
Department staff will be participating in the National Night Out at the 1st Block of W. Caracas Avenue in Hershey (Dauphin County) on August 1 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. This street fair is a national event in communities throughout the country and will included many different businesses, agencies, and clubs participating. It is free and open to the public.
The presentation "Fraud Bingo" – an interactive presentation to help participants learn ways to protect themselves from investment fraud and other financial scams – will be offered at the following location:
- St. Therese Plaza at 4 St. Therese Court in Munhall (Allegheny County) on August 11 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM (open to residents of property and guests ONLY)
Department staff will be offer a combined presentation of "Banking Basics" and "Creating a Spending Plan" at the following locations:
- Community Action Partnership of Somerset County at 535 E. Main Street in Somerset (Somerset County) on August 22 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM (open to program participants ONLY)
For Service Provider Groups:
Department staff will hold a breakout session during the 2017 PA Community on Transition Conference on ensuring quality financial education for students with disabilities at the Penn State Conference Center, 215 Innovation Parkway in State College (Centre County) on August 11 from 9:45 AM to 11:15 AM (open to conference participants ONLY).
