According to a May 6th article posted on the ABC News titled "Cooking Becomes Conduit for Cultural Discourse," there are many cooking initiatives across the country that aim to create a dialogue between Americans and foreigners. One example is the Multinational Exchange for Sustainable Agriculture (MESA), which gives American farmers the opportunity to learn from international experts on sustainable agriculture.
Some colleges have even instituted progressive courses that explore other cultures through cuisine. For instance, American University now offers a course on "gastrodiplomacy," the article says. These classes allow students to experience other cultures through food and dining out at local ethnic restaurants.
Other cooking classes throughout the country allow people to experience creating dishes from foreign cuisines, while learning the history behind the food. The League of Kitchens is an organization that teaches people to cook different foods from different cultures. "It's one of the most effective ways of 'artificially' initiating dialogue between cultures through scheduled activities that I've ever seen," J.P. Allen says of a Bengali cooking class organized by League of Kitchens.
Andrew Girard, a representative at CookingSchools.com, a leading directory of cooking schools in Florida, says learning to cook can expose people to different cultures and foods not typically consumed. "When you take cooking classes, you're not only learning how to prepare a certain food, you're learning about an entire culture," he says. "You can learn about food directly from someone who grew up cooking it in their home nation. Cooking not only awakens your creativity, but it enriches your cultural understanding. It's always great to learn new things and connect with people from other cultures. Cooking is the best way to educate yourself and become more accepting of different cultures."
