Corbett's Budget Shortchanges the Middle Class

HARRISBURG, Pa., July 2, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- After a difficult week of budget negotiations and votes in both chambers of the general assembly, the gavel came down tonight, and the State House recessed for the summer, without floor votes attacking workers through privatization, pension reform, or paycheck protection.

"Our slogan has always been, 'your fight is our fight,' and the solidarity demonstrated by the labor movement over this legislative session has embodied that mantra," said Pennsylvania AFL-CIO President Rick Bloomingdale

"We have successfully held off some of the worst attacks that Pennsylvania's Labor movement has ever faced, and we have held our ground, preventing or helping to overturn all of the extreme rights' agenda which was led by Governor Corbett, Turzai and Wagner. Their onslaught on basic worker rights was blocked at every turn," Bloomingdale said.

"Next week, the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO will hold our endorsement meeting to consider candidates for both chambers of the General Assembly, and Representatives in Congress.  We already have made our unanimous endorsement for Tom Wolf in the Governor's race," Bloomingdale said.

"The fact that we have endured nearly four years of failed leadership from Tom Corbett without suffering the consequences of the worst legislative attacks that this administration brought upon us, is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our 800,000 rank and file members across the Commonwealth," said Pennsylvania AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Frank Snyder

"As we shift our focus to the election campaign ahead of us, rest assured that we take nothing for granted, and our engagement in the legislative process will continue once our Representatives and Senators return in the fall," Snyder said.

"It's important to remember as the legislature leaves for summer recess, that 'recess' does not mean that anything is 'over.'  As we work towards the general election, we look forward to meeting both the challenges and opportunities that will come with a new legislature," Snyder said.
