Corimer™ Eco-Friendly Bio-Gel Offers Solutions To Deadly Global Insect- And Environmental Pollution-Related Challenges
Its lead physician-scientist cites the product's multiple benefits during address at international insect-control forum in China
CHICAGO, Nov. 20, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- In a recent address before the 2016 China National Insects Control Technology Forum in Xiamen, China, the founder of a research company that has developed Corimer™ bio-gel said the non-toxic, water-activated bio-adhesive technology offers solutions to global disease and pollution challenges.
Frank K. Leung, M.D., F.A.C.E., is the director of a team of biotech researchers at Coremed LLC, an Illinois-based company (www.coremedbiotech.com) that has developed Corimer™.
At the forum, Jiang Zhi Kuan, editor of the peer-reviewed Chinese Journal of Hygienic Insecticides & Equipment, where the Corimer™ findings were published, termed them "a revolutionary" environmental tool.
China is grappling with the heavy human, ecological and financial toll caused by pollution. It can apply Corimer™ to its advantage, Dr. Leung said, adding that official Chinese government statistics estimate that nearly 50 percent of the country's surface and urban groundwater is too polluted to use.
"The bio-gel offers a major advance towards a cleaner, friendlier environment," he said. "It can protect sources of drinking water; it can save beaches and shorelines from oil spills; and it can stop deadly insect infestation."
Leung, a summa cum laude graduate in chemistry, is a Harvard-trained, board-certified endocrinologist who has been engaged in diabetes and polymer research for 15 years.
Corimer safety data presented at AAPS, using rat fibroblast cell culture model for cell growth, morphology and apoptosis for chromatin condensation and nuclear fragmentation, suggests that it is non-toxic to living cells.
Applications of Corimer™ include:
Mosquito infestation:
Once the bio-gel makes contact with water, the gel forms a bio-adhesive covering immediately. It spreads rapidly into a uniform, transparent plastic film that can last days.
In vivo live larvae studies, the results indicated outstanding efficacy and reproducibility in killing 100% of the mosquitoes in 24 hours when a water's surface is completely covered by the bio-film, without the need to use insecticides or larvicides.
Oil Spills:
Corimer™ bio-gel is a powerful tool that can contain oil spills immediately. The bio-gel condenses all dispersed oil into a pool surrounded by bio-film. The force to contain the oil spread is so great that oil remains coerced for days. Oil can then easily be removed by burning or through conventional methods.
Clean-Water Management:
Corimer™ bio-gel applied to a water surface can contain algae, debris or garbage before conventional removal.
Organic Farming:
In organic farming, Corimer™ bio-gel can "freeze" and encapsulate small flying or crawling insects and remove them without the use of a pesticide. It can be used to seal ant tunnels. For larger insects, water can be applied directly to the insects' body and then sprayed with the gel.
Other applications can be used for public lavatories, underground sewage and as a protective layer on the skin.
