Corporations, Law Firms, Agencies and Government Regulators Convene in Chicago: PMA's Marketing Law Conference Tackles Industrywide Issues and ICANN Proposal
CHICAGO, Nov. 21, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- With an agenda featuring FTC commissioners, attorneys general, legal heavyweights and stewards of the world's leading brands, the Promotion Marketing Association's (PMA) Marketing Law Conference attracted an overflow crowd to Chicago's Downtown Marriott Hotel this week. The two-day event attracted more than 600 professionals involved in shaping the laws that govern modern marketers.
"This was our largest conference ever," said Ed Kabak, Chief Legal Officer of PMA. "Even in an era of closely watched travel costs, there is too much practical legal knowledge from over 100 nationally known regulators, brand legal speakers, top outside counsel and industry experts to miss."
Many of the conference's presentations, panels and discussions revolved around the intricacies of protecting consumer privacy, the vast collection of personal data as it applies to social media, mobile marketing and a host of federal and state laws, regulations and proposals, such as COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act), and Do Not Track laws. Speakers from the legal, corporate and government sectors all stressed the need for advertisers and government regulators to work together to move at a speed mandated by consumers and evolving technology.
PMA President Bonnie Carlson also used the occasion to announce the organization's strong opposition to ICANN's proposed rule changes regarding top-level domain names and to urge the audience to do the same. "We believe the proposal to create unlimited top-level domain names on the internet needs to be delayed," said Ms. Carlson. "These changes have the potential to dilute brand equity, hold corporations and brands hostage, and redefine the entire commercial landscape online. We are joining many strong voices in our industry who have called for more scrutiny before the new rules are enacted."
The 2012 PMA Marketing Law Conference returns to Chicago beginning November 13, 2012 and another record-breaking crowd is forecasted. "We will undoubtedly continue to grow," said Kabak. "The legal desk reference takeaways and the networking are truly extraordinary; as are the incredible streams of positive energy that surge through the conference."
