Executive Summary
This Key Note Market Report examines the market for cosmetic surgery and non-surgical procedures in the UK, covering facial, breast and body areas, as well as non-surgical cosmetic procedures. The report focuses mainly on the private sector and will exclude similar procedures being provided by the National Health Service (NHS).
The market for cosmetic surgery and non-surgery continued to demonstrate its full strength by increasing in both volume and value terms in 2011. Non-surgical procedures accounted for the majority of procedures carried out in 2011 (83.8%), while the surgical procedures contribute to the majority of procedures in terms of spending (67.8%). Between 2007 and 2011, the number of surgical and non-surgical procedures increased by an estimated 90%. The non-surgical sector experienced the highest growth, rising by almost 110% in volume, followed by breast surgery, which grew by 56.6%.
Major players profiled in the report include Spire Healthcare; the Harley Medical Centre; the Hospital Medical Group; and Nuffield Health, among others.
The PIP breast implant scandal that first emerged in France in 2009 has prompted the UK Government to investigate whether tighter regulation of the cosmetic surgery industry is needed. The Health Secretary, Andrew Lansley, has ordered a review into the safety and quality of private clinics offering cosmetic surgery in the UK. This, according to Key Note's 2012 report, has been an important influence over the cosmetic surgery industry in the UK over the past few years.
Key Note's consumer research shows that the proportion of respondents who are concerned over the lack of regulation in the cosmetic surgery industry has increased since 2010, by 7.2 percentage points, with 40.2% of respondents agreeing that this is a concern. A staggering 75.2% of respondents agree that people do not consider the risks involved when undergoing procedures, suggesting that a cautious, and somewhat sceptical, attitude still prevails. Meanwhile, the percentage of respondents who agree they would consider having cosmetic surgery/procedures but feel that the cost is prohibitive has fallen since 2010, by more than 7 percentage points, to 14.1%.
Despite these factors, the future of the cosmetic surgery industry looks positive: Key Note forecasts that the market for cosmetic surgery and non-surgical procedures will continue to expand, but at a slower pace than in the decade prior to the recession, coinciding with sluggish economic recovery, and with the maturing of the market.
