Country's Oldest Home Tour Benefits County's Newest Additions
CHESTER COUNTY, Pa., Sept. 2, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Unique in its history, architecture, art, landscape and antiques, Chester County has its own style, design aesthetic and even its own Day. For 74 years, the first Saturday in October has been reserved for the Country's oldest house tour – Chester County Day.
This year on October 4, 2014 participants can tour old and interesting houses, gardens, and historic landmarks in the Northeast section of Chester County which includes the Chester Springs, Kimberton, Charlestown, Phoenixville and Pottstown areas.
The Day begins with the pageantry and excitement of a fox hunt. This year the Kimberton Hunt will move off promptly at 9:00 am from the West Meadow at Historic Yellow Springs. Nearby visit several beautiful homes restored by noted area architects. Visit Anselma Mill, a National Historic Landmark that stands today as the most intact, authentic example of custom water powered grain mill in the United States.
Continue along the historic route that Washington's soldiers traveled centuries ago into Charlestown Village, where you can tour a private home, once a tenant house for mill workers, complete with charming cottage gardens and views from windows that overlook the Pickering Creek. Visit the Charlestown Woolen Mill and then stop along the road at the Revolutionary War cemetery to visit the gravesite of George Washington's doctor and see the over 200 graves of unknown soldiers of the Revolution. A one room school house from the early 1900's, converted to a private home, features a quaint country garden. As we travel through covered bridges near Kimberton enjoy a Victorian mansion, a family homestead for five generations. Tour the home and also the restored "party barn" that was original to the property. Just around the corner, enjoy the uniqueness of a reconverted barn and a charming country home.
