Cuyahoga Community College Receives $650,000 Kresge Foundation Grant to Recruit and Train Volunteer Tutors
CLEVELAND, March 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) received a $650,000 grant from The Kresge Foundation to increase the number of tutors who will help Tri-C students succeed in courses such as Intermediate Algebra and College Composition.
The funding will enable the College to significantly increase the number of tutors at its campuses by recruiting volunteers to serve as tutors from several groups—professionals working in fields related to student courses of study; Tri-C students who have advanced in their college coursework; students who have transferred to local four-year institutions; Tri-C employees; and members of community organizations. Tutors will receive training and will be certified by the College Reading and Learning Association.
According to Dr. Jerry Sue Thornton, president of Cuyahoga Community College, "A strategic goal of Tri-C is to provide a supportive learning environment for our students. The volunteer tutors identified and engaged through the Kresge Foundation partnership will support this goal and have a tremendous impact on the lives of many of our students."
In addition to building a program of community of volunteer tutors, the grant will be used to develop online tutoring resources and encourage volunteer tutors to become student mentors. The program will develop a database to match student needs in specific courses with the expertise of tutors and establish a tutor recognition program.
A portion of the Kresge funds will create a special program that focuses on the tutoring needs of minority men. This program will include outreach strategies in the community, at other post-secondary institutions, and within Tri-C to recruit men to serve as tutors and mentors.
The Kresge Foundation is a $2.8 billion private, national foundation that seeks to influence the quality of life for future generations through its support of nonprofit organizations in six fields of interest—health, the environment, community development, arts and culture, education and human services.
