Bronx facility acquisition from Stericycle increases Daniels' capabilities in the Northeast

BRONX, N.Y., June 24, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Daniels Sharpsmart Inc., the world's largest provider of reusable systems for sharps disposal, has acquired the Bronx medical waste facility from Stericycle making Daniels the second largest medical waste disposal company in North America.

Daniels' acquisition of the Bronx facility, its 14th in the United States, significantly expands Daniels' capabilities throughout the East Coast as well as its footprint in North America.

Located at 1281 Viele Ave., Daniels' Bronx facility will give hospitals and other medical and dental facilities in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island a safe, cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to Stericycle for medical waste and sharps disposal service.

The Department of Justice required Stericycle to divest the Bronx facility to Daniels to remedy the loss of competition resulting from Stericycle's acquisition of Healthcare Waste Solutions (HWS). Under the Department of Justice Consent Order, Stericycle must notify HWS customers served by the Bronx facility that they have the right to end their existing contracts without penalty within 90 days of receiving the notice.

Daniels' Bronx facility provides a fully integrated and technologically advanced system that ensures safe, cost effective and regulatory compliant disposal of medical, sharps and pharmaceutical waste.

A recent article published in the American Journal of Infection Control reported an 81 percent reduction in container-associated sharps injuries that occurred in a group of 14 hospitals using Daniels Sharpsmart containers over one year.
