DARPA Awards CyberPoint New $6M Research Contract

BALTIMORE, June 9, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- CyberPoint International announced today that it has been awarded a research contract from DARPA. The DARPA Space/Time Analysis for Cybersecurity (STAC) contract, worth slightly more than $6 million over four years, will support work in an area of vital importance to the Department of Defense. CyberPoint's work will enable research tools to be well tested, and it will expose potential space/time problems in algorithms and applications that could be in use today.

The idea behind the STAC program, DARPA explains, is to "enable analysts to identify algorithmic resource usage vulnerabilities in software at levels of scale and speed great enough to support a methodical search for them in the software upon which the U.S. government, military, and economy depend." CyberPoint Labs, CyberPoint's dedicated research and development team, will construct algorithms that have subtle, intentional, algorithmic complexity and side channel flaws. Their expected use will be to measure the efficacy of tools created by other teams. As CyberPoint's principal investigator Tom Hennen puts it, "These algorithms will be automatically permuted using variant generators to produce a multiplicity of samples varying in size and complexity."
