NEW YORK, May 18, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- delivery.com, a leading platform for online ordering from local restaurants and stores, today announced a pilot program with the District of Columbia Taxicab Commission (DCTC) that gives consumers greater access to on-demand delivery of food, laundry, and other goods and services. While delivery.com presently offers service in the Washington, D.C. area, this innovative public-private integration brings added speed, choice, and flexibility to District residents and local businesses by leveraging the DCTC vehicles-for-hire already on the road.
The program will initially feature meals from select restaurants for lunch-hour delivery, including Bolt Burgers, Buredo, Capitol Hill Crab Cakes, Cheers at the Big Chair, Mayur Kabab, Merzi, and Tortino.
Leading up to the announcement, delivery.com has added a number of new merchants to its marketplace, including many in some of the District's previously underserved areas. Over the coming months, the DCTC's participation will expand to include more restaurants and on-demand categories — including groceries and laundry — and more drivers delivering outside of lunchtime hours.
For consumers who already know and love the convenience of delivery.com, the only change comes in the form of expanded choice and faster delivery times. Users will continue to place their orders via delivery.com's website or mobile apps, while behind the scenes the participating restaurant prepares their meal, and the closest available DCTC driver is dispatched to fulfill the delivery. A simple integration with delivery.com's API makes the fluid sharing of technology possible between local merchants, the DCTC driver-side app, and delivery.com customers.
"It's great to see the DCTC embracing innovation to evolve the taxi business," says Jed Kleckner, CEO of delivery.com. "And it's really gratifying to know that our technology provides a gateway for the D.C. community — from the public sector to local merchants and consumers — to share in the benefits of the digital economy."
The announcement is the latest example of delivery.com's technology facilitating commerce for transportation players across the public and private sectors, creating new economic opportunities for drivers, new efficiencies for local merchants, and, ultimately, an excellent delivery experience for customers.
"It's exciting to assist with the coordination of this public-private program to produce value and provide customer service," DCTC Chairman Ernest Chrappah said. "By leveraging available capacity in public vehicles-for-hire, licensed drivers have another source of revenue and the District continues to support innovative solutions to satisfy public demands."
