Denver Attorney Turns Personal Tragedy into Public Safety Campaign
DENVER, July 5, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- In 2007, attorney Keith Fuicelli was jogging just a few blocks from his City Park home when a car going 45 mph hit him. He suffered life-threatening injuries and had to be resuscitated on the scene. He spent two weeks in the ICU and then two months at Craig Rehabilitation hospital. Following his release from Craig, Fuicelli spent the next 12 months rehabbing from a traumatic brain injury and other injuries sustained in the near-fatal crash.
The fact that Keith himself is a personal injury lawyer was not lost on him. "Most people do not understand how vulnerable and terrifying it is going through a serious accident. Unless you have been through it, it is very difficult to comprehend the worry, self-doubt, and frustration that accompany a personal injury," Fuicelli says.
In a step towards improving bicycle and pedestrian safety Fuicelli and his firm, Fuicelli & Lee P.C., has partnered with Colorado non-profit Project Recycle to launch the "Be Aware" bicycle safety campaign. Project Recycle restores donated bicycles and provides them (and helmets) to low-income children. The "Be Aware" campaign will combine social media with political style yard signs to help remind all drivers that Summer is here and bicyclists are everywhere. The goal of the campaign is to encourage drivers to slow down, take an extra second, and look around for bicyclists and pedestrians, especially children.
"We all live...not thinking it can happen to us or our loved ones. If it can happen to me, it can happen to anyone," Fuicelli says. "Our goal is to increase driver awareness about bicyclists. If the campaign can prevent even one crash from occurring, our goal is met."
The vulnerability of children is especially concerning to Project Recycle executive director AJ Stapleton. "Bicycles are a freedom for many of these children, and we don't want to take that freedom away from them. So let's be cautious and let's be aware on the roads."
Those who want to help raise bicycle safety awareness this summer can pick up a "Be Aware" yard sign at Project Recycle, the Law Firm of Fuicelli & Lee, P.C. or at any of the Denver area bike stores listed here: http://www.coloradoinjurylaw.com/be-aware
To encourage participation, Fuicelli & Lee P.C. will provide Project Recycle with one bicycle for every 15 yard signs that are distributed. Get involved and help prevent a crash while providing bicycles to children in need!
