Denver Book Author Says Caregivers Must Put Their Own Needs First
She offers actionable tips for caring for others without killing themselves in the process.
DENVER, May 27, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Carol Core knows that being a caregiver can be totally overwhelming. In fact, being the non-paid caregiver for her mother, father and uncle while simultaneously holding down a full-time job, being a mother and a grandmother nearly killed her. But it also taught her a lot.
With the June launch of her new book, 50 Sanity Saving Tips for Caregivers: You Don't Have to Kill Yourself to Keep Them Alive, Core is now sharing what she learned during her 12-year journey caring for her loved ones, alongside the 65 million other non-paid family caregivers across the U.S. Together, these caregivers provide more than $420 billion in free annual care, that would otherwise have to be paid for by insurance companies and Medicare.
What she has to say should be of interest to anyone who is currently a caregiver or anyone who could easily find themselves becoming a caregiver, should a family member suddenly break a hip or suffer some other medical emergency.
Core's most important tip is to put the caregiver's needs first. She uses the analogy of putting on an oxygen mask in flight. She says, "Put your oxygen mask on first before assisting those around you. If you aren't breathing and safe, your loved ones won't be either, so it is absolutely mandatory that you care for yourself first."
She also explains why:
- Caregivers need to learn to laugh at the insanity that comes with the job.
- It's important to have a plan in place before bad things happen.
- Working with an eldercare coach can significantly lower your stress and save you time and money
- Feeling guilty comes with the job so don't be surprised when it happens, or believe your own negative self-talk.
