Detroit Thermal Provides Efficient Steam Heat to Ford Field Detroit Lions' Home Will Meet Expanding Needs While Reducing Environmental Impact

DETROIT, Oct. 22, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Detroit Thermal (www.detroitthermal.com), owner and operator of the district energy steam system throughout the greater downtown Detroit area, today announced that as of this month, it is supplying hot water heaters for Ford Field, home of the Detroit Lions. Detroit Thermal (DT) has worked closely with Ford Field to replace the stadium's natural gas hot water heaters with three steam heat exchangers that will improve efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and meet the expanding demands.

"We were excited to have the opportunity to work with one of our local partners to provide a superior stadium experience for our team and fans while also being mindful of our environment," said Tom Lewand, Detroit Lions team president. Ford Field removed and recycled the older gas water heaters trading them for smaller, more efficient steam heat exchangers that will produce hot water for the 65,000-seat sports and entertainment complex. The new system was up and running at the Lion's game against the Minnesota Vikings on September 30th.

Stadium management also considered the environmental advantage of switching to DT steam. "We estimate the conversion away from natural gas will result in a 32 percent reduction in carbon emissions," said Scott Barr, DT director of business development. The versatile steam exchangers heat water quickly when needed, rather than keeping large quantities of water hot all the time.

Ford Field's steam heat exchangers represent just one of many contributions DT is making to Detroit's revitalization. In an effort to supply sustainable fuel to existing city corporations and new, growing enterprises, DT produces its steam through renewable sources—the city's solid waste. Detroit Renewable Power, DT's sister company, converts as much as 3,300 tons of solid waste a day into refuse-derived fuel that is used to create more than 700,000 pounds of steam per hour.
