DETROIT-WINDSOR TUNNEL IS LIGHTING THE WAY TO A GREENER WORLD!
DETROIT-WINDSOR, Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ - The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel has implemented changes to both lighting and ventilation systems that offer great advances in environmental sustainability while increasing efficiency. "In the Spring of 2010, we took the first steps by contracting for the replacement of the existing metal halide lighting with more energy efficient LED lighting fixtures," states Robert Howell, Facility Manager, Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. "These fixtures have instant re-strike capability, and the estimated annual electrical savings is approximately $128,000."
Work is scheduled to begin in December 2010, with Motor City Electric Co. (MCE) and their Canadian counterpart, Mid-South Contractors, handling the job. "Completion is expected by the Spring of 2011," predicts Howell. "And with the accrued savings in energy costs, the projected payback is less than 10 years."
The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel is also stepping up its environmental commitment with updated mechanical operating systems. "The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel migrated to Semi-Transverse air flow in place of Full Transverse operation," states Trevor Pearce, Manager of Information Technology. "This allows the ventilation system to use fewer fans at speeds that move air more efficiently. The net result is an increase in the volume of air circulated through the tunnel while using less energy."
Working with the City of Windsor and under the oversight of Parsons Brinckerhoff MI, Inc., a system was developed that is both effective and efficient. "Air quality is obviously of paramount importance," says Pearce. "Throughout 2010, air quality improved considerably and energy usage decreased by 2,000,000 Kw/hrs annually. Those are substantial savings."
The air quality in the tunnel is measured continuously by sensors placed throughout the tunnel that will dynamically increase the quantity of air circulation based on demand.
Did you know? The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel celebrated its 80th anniversary on November 3rd, 2010! More than 355 MILLION vehicles have used the Tunnel since its opening in 1930.
