Detroiters Undeterred by Lack of Job Prospects Residents Committed to Staying in City and Have Suggestions on How to Improve Job Situation

MELVILLE, N.Y., April 29, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- More than three-quarters (76 percent) of Detroit residents are not considering moving outside the city to find a job, despite a 9.9 percent unemployment rate, according to the "Way to Work" survey conducted by Adecco Staffing US, part of the world's largest provider of recruitment and workforce solutions. This civic loyalty remains despite the fact that a majority (78 percent) of those unemployed do not feel confident that they will find a job in the next three to five months and 66 percent are not confident they will find one in the next six to 12 months.

Among the biggest challenges for Detroit jobseekers, 61 percent say there aren't enough jobs available and 18 percent believe it is too expensive to travel to job interviews. Another serious problem is that there seems to be a disconnect between the jobs that are available and the skills that jobseekers possess. In fact, 38 percent of respondents believe Detroit job applicants lack the required education or specialized training for jobs that are currently open, and 36 percent believe local job seekers lack the skills and training for the new jobs and industries that are coming to the area.

"Detroit is a resilient city, as evidenced by the loyalty of its residents," said Lauren Griffin, senior vice president of Adecco Staffing US. "As the city continues to reinvent itself and begins to attract new industries, residents will need the right skills to meet the evolving needs of the city. All stakeholders – businesses, government, and residents – need to do their part to help close the local skills gap."

When it comes to obtaining the skills they need for the jobs that exist, residents feel the state government should actively support the effort. Nearly one-fifth (19 percent) say the state should partner with the new industries and businesses that are coming to Detroit to offer more specialized training, and 18 percent say the state should partner with local colleges / universities and trade schools to provide free or subsidized higher education / learning programs. Residents would also like to see a more concerted effort behind encouraging new industries, such as technology and healthcare, to come and develop in the Detroit area (20 percent).

To offer Detroit residents some help with their job search, Adecco will be hosting a "careerathon" on April 30 at the Wayne State University Campus in the McGreggor Memorial Conference Center. From 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., attendees will be able learn about tips, tools, and resources to help them find employment. Free services will be available throughout the course of the day, including 1:1 career counseling, job search advice, resume tips, mock interviews, and networking opportunities.

The Detroit "careerathon" is part of Adecco's global "Way to Work" program, which is designed to address one of the most serious issues impacting today's labor market – youth unemployment. Similar careerathons will take place at hundreds of Adecco branches across the country.

"Detroit is a city that everyone wants to see succeed, but fixing its unemployment problem is going to be a long task," Griffin said. "We believe that Adecco has the right position, connections, and resources to help make a difference in the lives of these individuals that are eager to get back to work."
