Día de la Mujer Conference Announces Award-Winning Writer/ Producer Kiki Melendez as Keynote Speaker
Conference Takes Place at Michigan State University on April 8, 2017
EAST LANSING, Mich., March 8, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The 24th annual Día de la Mujer (DDLM) conference is set for Saturday, April 8, 2017 and will present a prominent line-up of Latina experts from various fields, with writer/producer Kiki Melendez as keynote speaker. The Michigan State University Culturas de las Razas Unidas Latino Student Organization and Office of Cultural and Academic Transitions organized the event to inspire and educate attendees from across the Midwest, and celebrate Latin culture and women.
"I am thrilled and humbled to be part of this day," Melendez said. "I wouldn't have the successes that I had in my life without inspirational women who came before me and it's important for me to help guide others in achieving their dreams."
The conference theme is Shaping Our Future: Independientes y Seguras, ¡Mujer! (Shaping Our Future: Woman, Independent and Confident!). Presenters will discuss how they became stronger with each barrier they faced, and what tools have been helpful to them in their journey. Attendees will choose from an array of workshops focusing on self-empowerment and building self-confidence. DDLM will celebrate the contributions of Latinas from a myriad of countries and backgrounds.
This year's keynote speaker perfectly encapsulates the event's theme of independence and confidence. Award-winning comedienne, actress, writer, and producer Kiki Melendez was raised in New York by a single mom. Melendez began her career in radio and went on to produce and appear in the Showtime networks sketch comedy series "Hot Tamales Live!" and host the bilingual Galavision show "Kiki Desde Hollywood." She will share her story, and the source of her confidence and vision.
The conference began at Michigan State University in 1994 to highlight the accomplishments of Latina women in the community. Since then it has expanded into multi-faceted workshops focusing on education, health, politics, inter-personal relationships, culture, personal development, and self-empowerment.
The event will be held at Michigan State University's Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center at 219 S. Harrison Road in East Lansing, Michigan from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Online registration is open at ddlm.ocat.msu.edu.
