Background
"Recent developmental advances have allowed silicon (Si) semiconductor technology to approach theoretical limits… new semiconductor materials… are needed."[1] It has been well established that diamond is well suited to replace silicon in application use as only diamond has been shown to possess the sufficient critical characteristics with respect to power, speed, and thermal performance.
Key Characteristics & Benefits
With the debut of the Miraj Diamond™ Platform, AKHAN Technologies, Inc. has developed a process in which n-type diamond material is created over silicon with previously undemonstrated characteristics, including:
- Shallow ionization energy of 250 meV,
- Higher carrier mobility (greater than 1000 cm(2)/VS in nanocrystalline diamond thin films),
- No graphitic phases, and
- High performance in low voltage high current diode device applications (900 A/mm(2) current density at +2V forward bias).
Directly challenging the domination of silicon, microchips fabricated from the Miraj Diamond™ Platform boast the capability to run electronics at higher speeds, with increased power handling capability, without overheating. The Platform has the ability to yield the smaller, faster, and cheaper IT and consumer electronics applications of tomorrow.
Performance testing of N-type diamond film-based semiconductors in transistor diode applications versus silicon semiconductors has resulted in the following (Complete details on request):
- Superior performance with 300% smaller chip surface and 1000x less material.
- Improved performance with reduced cost – diamond material cost is approximately 25% less than processed silicon for identical device functionality.
- Ease of processing. "The cost of adoption is negligible," said Adam Khan, President of AKHAN Technologies, Inc. Few additional tooling costs.
- Reduced time to full commercialization. Already 7 years of proprietary process libraries.
- A comprehensive integrated patent portfolio. Every claim regarding fabrication is novel.
Working prototypes are available for testing by qualified purchasers. Additional information about the technology is available here.
Market Potential
This portfolio is important to the entire semiconductor industry.
- As of 2010, the semiconductor industry is a $310 billion global market.
