Direct Energy Devices Fueling Growth In US Open Surgery Instrument Market
Open Surgical Procedures Being Sustained Despite Growing Use of Laparoscopy, According to Millennium Research Group
TORONTO, May 8, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- According to Millennium Research Group (MRG), the global authority on medical technology market intelligence, the open surgery instrument market in the United States will be driven by the increasing adoption of direct energy devices in open surgical procedures and the shift toward premium-priced closure devices.
Historically, the use of direct energy devices was relatively low in open surgeries. However, adoption of these devices will increase rapidly due to their easily demonstrable benefits, namely cost savings for health care facilities through the reduction of procedure times compared to suturing, and the superior ability to cut and seal compared to alternative technologies such as monopolar energy. As a result, the open surgery direct energy device market will expand significantly at a compound annual growth rate of about 11 percent through 2021.
Although some segments of the closure device market are shrinking in the face of competition from laparoscopic procedures and reprocessed devices, other segments will be bolstered by product innovations. For example, absorbable skin staplers eliminate the need for a second surgery to remove these devices, which reduces overall procedure costs. These absorbable devices are also priced at a premium, which will lead to modest growth in the skin stapling device segment.
The open surgery instrument market will nonetheless be limited by the general movement of procedures toward minimally invasive approaches such as laparoscopy. The increasing popularity of minimally invasive procedures will allow open surgical procedure volumes to grow only marginally. This slight expansion in open procedure volumes will be sustained by certain procedures in which laparoscopic access is too difficult or not possible, such as pancreatectomies or cesarean sections.
"Many surgeons and patients are choosing minimally invasive options if they are available, but there are certain surgeon groups that still overwhelmingly prefer open approaches," said MRG Analyst Chantal Dougan. "Head and neck surgeons and, to a lesser extent, thoracic surgeons, are the best groups for open surgery instrument manufacturers to target."
The market is primarily dominated by Covidien and Ethicon Endo-Surgery, both of which offer direct energy devices and closure devices. These two companies have benefited by having extensive product lines, which allows them to offer more attractive product bundles.
