Dislocations in the Chronic Pain Market are Creating Opportunities for Novel Analgesics According to a New Market Research Study Among Patients Assessing Evolving Chronic Pain Management Trends in the U.S.

FAIRFIELD, N.J., July 19, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to heightened concerns with opioid prescribing and the release of recent guidelines, Pain Insights conducted a study, "Harmonizing Clinical Practice and Clinical Guidelines in the Management of Chronic Pain — From the Patient Perspective," to characterize evolving trends in the treatment of chronic pain from the viewpoint of the patient.

Study Details:

The study created patient segments determined by their receptivity to specific aspects of recent guideline recommendations as well as factors such as their level of engagement with therapy, degree of pain interference, and views of opioid therapy for chronic pain. The survey also measured patient utilization of non-opioid medications, access to non-pharmacologic therapies, and measurement of satisfaction levels with various therapies. 

Sample findings:

• Four segments with different opinions on the dimensions mentioned above were identified by statistical analysis.
• Segmentation yielded populations of patients that may be better suited for novel agents in development - new targets, such as anti-nerve growth factor agents (anti-NGF), or innovative approaches with existing drug targets based on factors such as their satisfaction with therapy, co-morbid conditions, medication-focused behavior, and/or adherence concerns.
• New therapies or greater access to current approaches are needed for patients who have discontinued opioid therapy. Approximately 40% of past opioid users with moderate-to-severe pain are "not at all-slightly satisfied" with their current therapy, pointing to additional unmet needs among this large patient population.
• In one segment, 6% and 17% of patients respectively, have turned to medical marijuana for relief, depending on whether they were currently taking or not taking opioids.
• Chronic pain as a result of trauma or surgery was identified as a key area of concern in multiple segments, for example," I have no idea what could be done.  It is a pain in my leg as a result of knee surgery and it makes sleep almost impossible without some relief. "

Sample Description:

Respondents (n=1,000) were actively seeking care for their moderate-to-severe chronic pain from a medical practitioner, and: were either already taking an opioid, had previously taken an opioid, or were opioid naïve.
