DNAinfo.com New York Wins Four Silurians Journalism Awards
Editorial team recognized for coverage of Metro-North train crash, Brooklyn's yeshiva schools, GMHC scandal and Baby Hope
NEW YORK, May 15, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- DNAinfo.com New York, the city's leading neighborhood news source, congratulates its reporting team for winning four awards in the annual Society of Silurians Excellence in Journalism awards contest.
DNAinfo.com's Criminal Justice Editor Murray Weiss won first place in the online breaking news category for his exclusive report that Metro-North train engineer William Rockefeller admitted to dozing at the wheel before the derailment that killed four passengers. Former DNAinfo.com reporter Sonja Sharp earned first place in the online public service category for her three-part series that exposed the educational failings of Brooklyn's yeshiva schools – which left some graduates unable to speak or write in English.
"We're proud of our reporting team's ability to uncover news from all parts of the city that no one else was reporting, and in many cases, effect change," said Michael P. Ventura, managing editor, DNAinfo.com New York. "Murray Weiss' story redirected the public conversation about the Metro-North investigation."
DNAinfo.com New York won two merit awards. One was in the online public service category for Mathew Katz's investigation into the misuse of funds by prominent AIDS charity Gay Men's Health Crisis. Murray Weiss' story about the NYPD's identification of Baby Hope, 22 years after her murder, was also recognized in the online commentary category.
The awards are being presented tonight at the Society of the Silurians awards banquet. The Society of the Silurians was founded in 1924 by veteran New York journalists, and remains a venerable club of past and present staff members of newspapers and related organizations.
