dotCMS Scales with Data Grids and Hazelcast
dotCMS 4.1 focuses of performance-driven improvements and platform scalability
MIAMI, June 6, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- dotCMS, a leading-edge, open source Java content management platform, has released the latest version in their 4.x Series: dotCMS 4.1. This new version now takes advantage of emerging data grid technologies to improve enterprise-level scale and manageability. The latest release incorporates Hazelcast's data grid and includes infrastructure needed to support other data grid providers, including Redis/Reddison, GridGain and the Apache Ignite project.
"The emphasis of this release really is about dotCMS's scalability, performance, and manageability," said Will Ezell, dotCMS CTO. "While the first release in our 4.x Series focused on the frontend of the platform, this continues to decouple the components of dotCMS which makes the platform faster, more flexible, and able to scale with customers."
With a special spotlight on enterprise users, Hazelcast, an enterprise data grid solution, allows dotCMS customers to better scale enterprise applications. Performance optimizations were added on distributed content, meaning content objects and data can be spread across an elastic dotCMS cluster or even stored off-cluster if needed, increasing the speed of dotCMS.
dotCMS 4.1 also improves the overall memory requirements of the platform. Changes have been made to the presentation layer, the cache and the Elasticsearch indexing layer that can significantly decrease the memory required to run a high performance dotCMS node, sometimes by as much as 50%.
Improvements have also been made to the platform's new UI that result in much faster load times and includes full support of IE 11. Also, dotCMS's image tooling now supports the generation of progressive Jpegs that are key to speedy, responsive designs.
"Our customers wanted more control over the management dotCMS. They wanted to easily configure dotCMS, maintain the configuration, and create a repeatable deployment of the configuration," said Ezell.
New manageability improvements include the fact that dotCMS can be completely configure via the environment: JSON-based ContentTypes, new REST endpoints for defining and managing ContentTypes, fields, and field variables, backwards compatibility, and new API builders to programmatically create content types.
