Dr. Alavi Highlights Rising Plastic Surgery Trends among Millennials
New statistics reveal that an increasing number of younger patients are seeking cosmetic correction through plastic surgery options. Dr. Alavi, San Diego-based plastic surgeon, comments on this trend.
SAN DIEGO, Jan. 28, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Although plastic surgery has a long history of providing new options for many individuals who want to correct a variety of cosmetic issues, it has generally remained associated with the needs of older patients including those who wish to repair signs of aging. However, a recent article from The Huffington Post assesses new a growing number of statistics that reveals plastic surgeons are treating significantly more Generation Y patients. While millennials are notably younger than the traditional patient, Dr. Alavi notes that he has also witnessed an increase in this demographic at his own practice, the Center for Cosmetic Surgery in San Diego located in Southern California.
The article cites recent data published by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). It states, "In 2011, just under 800,000 cosmetic procedures were performed in the U.S. on people in their 20s, an increase of six per cent from the year before. Since 2000, the total number of cosmetic procedures has risen 87 per cent over all age groups, totaling 13.8 million in 2011." Millennials are not the only group of young patients who are starting to seek out plastic surgery solutions, as the article notes an increasing number of teenagers have sought out surgeries.
The Huffington Post notes that some of the public has become concerned with the rising number in cosmetic surgeries sought out by this younger group of patients. However, Dr. Alavi notes that Millennial patients are also typically well-educated about the procedures, as they have grown accustomed to learning about their options on the Internet before making the decision to undergo surgery. Dr. Alavi comments, "At the Center for Cosmetic Surgery in San Diego, we have also noted a much larger population of patients, 18 to 30 years of age, are coming for some form of plastic surgery. This population is very in tune with the latest in cosmetic surgery trends and uses the Internet and medical journals to get most of their information."
According to Dr. Alavi, the procedures sought out by this generation are typically liposuction, rhinoplasty or breast augmentation procedures. Although these procedures are known to help improve a patient's self-esteem, Dr. Alavi encourages other surgeons to use more careful and selective judgment when approving individuals in this demographic for surgery.
