Dr. Massingale co-founded the predecessor company to TeamHealth in 1979 to staff two hospital emergency departments in Knoxville, Tennessee. He served as founder and chief executive officer of the company from 1979-2009, when he became executive chairman.

Under Dr. Massingale's leadership, TeamHealth has achieved impressive growth. Indeed, once he set his sights on national expansion, over a four-year period Dr. Massingale effected the largest merger of emergency physician groups at that time while simultaneously leading rapid organic growth. The company's revenues grew from $70 million in 1995 to $500 million in 1999. He also led the company's expansion into the hospitalist, anesthesiology, general and trauma surgery, orthopedic surgery and hospital-based obstetrics service lines.
