Drip Drop Donates to Direct Relief International to Help Victims of Super Storm Sandy
SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 14, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Drip Drop, Inc., a medical start-up dedicated to the scientific advancement and application of oral rehydration solutions (ORS), is participating in on-the-ground efforts assisting victims of Hurricane Sandy.
Five hundred packets of Drip Drop's proprietary ORS are being used by Direct Relief International, which is providing critical medical services in the worst affected areas. With Drip Drop ORS, relief workers can help patients recover from dehydration resulting from stress, strenuous activity, and diarrhea.
Enduring partnership:
Drip Drop was founded in 2008 with a mission to reduce the deaths and suffering due to dehydration worldwide. The donation is the latest step in an enduring relationship with Direct Relief International. In 2011, Drip Drop donated over 25,000 Drip Drop ORS to Direct Relief International's missions in Haiti and around the United States.
"Hard Work, innovative technology, and the generosity of donors such as Drip Drop enabled us to reach out to millions of children, adults, families, and communities across the globe." – Direct Relief International
Drip Drop's latest donation extends a long track record of effectiveness in humanitarian missions, including work in Africa, Asia, and South America. In the last month alone, Drip Drop has donated over 2,000 units to relief missions in Cambodia and Togo, West Africa.
ORS: A Proven Method:
First adopted by the World Health Organization more than 30 years ago, oral rehydration solutions constitute a simple mixture of salt and sugar taken orally with water. By enhancing the water absorption process, ORS have proven to be cheaper, easier to administer, and can help avoid IV treatment for mild to moderate dehydration. This portability and simplicity has made ORS an essential tool for military personnel, volunteers, and emergency medical staff working to save lives in relief situations.
Oral rehydration solutions have been part of standard medical practice internationally for over 30 years. Drip Drop ORS has made this proven method available to American doctors and their patients, online and over the counter at San Francisco pharmacies.
Key Facts:
More children (5 years and younger) die every year from preventable dehydration than from AIDS, Malaria, and Tuberculosis combined.
ORS is a chosen method for UNICEF, World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control, and Doctors Without Borders.
Drip Drop's humanitarian efforts have resulted in Drip Drop ORS being used by thousands of children and adults.
