DSS Outlines RFID Business Strategy
First Six Months 2011 RFID Product Sales Triple over Entire Calendar Year 2010
ROCHESTER, N.Y., July 21, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- In June 2011, DSS (DSS: NYSE/AMEX) was pleased to announce its hiring of Gary Andrechak as Manager of RFID Business Development, marking DSS's major commitment to the estimated $5 billion global RFID card market. With the addition of Mr. Andrechak, DSS has developed new RFID products and solutions to target the rapidly growing RFID market, which the Company outlines below.
Document Security Systems, Plastics Group (Formerly "P3" and "Plastic Printing Professionals"), located in San Francisco, California announced a product roadmap expansion of its radio frequency identification (RFID) offerings to meet customer demand for more intelligent credentials and item level tagging technologies. The DSS Plastics Group's RFID-related sales of low frequency, high frequency, and ultra high frequency (LF, HF, UHF) products have tripled in the first six months of 2011 compared to the entire 2010 calendar year with more, larger orders expected in the coming second half of the 2011 calendar from both new and existing customers. The roadmap includes selective development of complete RFID solutions that leverage the combined strengths of the DSS Group companies, including ExtraDev cloud computing group which was acquired by DSS in May of 2011.
The upward trend in the company's RFID-enabled products is partly based on the organic growth and adoption of RFID applications in security and item tracking. The Group fills a profitable niche in that these markets require very high reliability plastic constructions that protect the RFID circuitry within from the natural elements such as extreme temperatures and normal physical wear and tear more completely than traditional paper or plastic film RFID labels. Yet the Group's price points for its RFID constructions are below those of typical hardened, industrial RFID tags. Additionally, all of DSS Plastics Group's products draw from its full color graphics printing, variable print, and mass serialization expertise gained from decades in the gift card and identification card markets. The Group also has at its disposal the complete portfolio of patented print security features of the DSS parent company to include in higher sophistication RFID credentials and other constructions. Even if the electricity goes out, the DSS Plastics Group's high intrinsic value RFID credentials can still be authenticated using multiple validation techniques.
The main strategic goal of the DSS Plastics Group's RFID business model is to shift from a base of production of custom sized and printed cards, placards, and durable tags to total RFID solutions that solve real business needs without a lot of development time and total cost of ownership to end users. The growth of common inter-communication capabilities across RFID technologies and hardware is making it easier and more affordable to link RFID tag data attached to items or credentials to databases managed in the cloud. Well thought authentication and traceability RFID services can be delivered instantly using a software-as-a-service (SaaS) delivery method already available from the DSS Cloud Computing (ExtraDev) Division.
According to ABI Research, The 2011 forecast of the RFID market without automobile immobilization is $5 billion, growing in excess of 14% over 2010.
