CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 28, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Duke Energy Carolinas today is issuing a request for proposals (RFP) to purchase up to 1,500 megawatts of intermediate and/or peaking electricity generation (capacity and energy) in the 2015 to 2017 timeframe.

The company has a diverse and long-term sustainable strategy to ensure it can deliver on its commitment to customers to provide affordable, reliable and clean electricity today and for decades to come.
The RFP is driven by the company's plan to retire by 2015 all unscrubbed coal-fired generation in the Carolinas, where it is not economical to install a sulfur-dioxide scrubber. These retirements are being driven by known and anticipated stricter federal environmental regulations.
Proposals from qualified bidders will be evaluated based on cost and other factors.
Respondents must deliver capacity and energy for a minimum of one year on dates between Jan. 1, 2015 and Dec. 31, 2017. Consideration will also be given for proposals that start prior to Jan. 1, 2015.
Proposals are due no later than Nov. 1, 2011 at 5 p.m. ET.
Interested parties should review the full request for proposal guidelines at: http://DukeEnergyCarolinaRFP.com/ .
Inquiries can also be made via email to: [email protected] .
A separate RFP for renewable energy and Renewable Energy Certificates from wind resources is also being administered by Duke Energy Carolinas. Information on that RFP may be found at http://www.duke-energy.com/suppliers/carolinas-rfp.asp.
