IRVINE, Calif., May 6, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Digital Video Enterprises, Inc. (DVE) announced today that it was selected to design and implement the state-of-the-art immersive telepresence solution for the DOE CASL Innovation Hub (www.casl.gov) for leading scientists and engineers from around the U.S.
DVE's Huddle 70 immersive telepresence system was custom configured for the Virtual Office Community and Computing (VOCC) Laboratory. The DVE Huddle 70 uniquely positions the camera behind an image plane at eye level, hidden from view, providing true eye contact for system users. Hundreds of researchers, who are thousands of miles apart, appear to be sitting across the table — connecting with true eye contact.
According to April Lewis, CASL's Collaboration and Ideation Officer, "It substantially reduces collaboration costs over traditional technologies." Lewis elaborates, "VOCC allows three or 300 people to meet, interact, and collaborate in a way that can only be enhanced through face-to-face meetings. VOCC gives me scalability with just the right amount of security. It's easy to use and more reliable than more conventional options. We wanted researchers to essentially 'plug and play' so they can focus on their research."
DVE Telepresence is an authorized reseller of Vidyo and designed the VOCC solution to utilize the expansive capabilities of Vidyo. According to Jeff Machtig, co-founder of DVE, "We are pleased Vidyo was utilized for this high profile DOE funded project. Vidyo has proven to be a leading innovative force in videoconferencing from the desktop to being fully integrated into DVE's award winning immersive telepresence experiences."
The VOCC Edge Units (based on the DVE Huddle 70) have been integrated with multiple 3D visualization venues. The Edge Units are HD quality, inter-operable with SIP and H.323 signaling, providing encryption and true eye contact. The final solution delivers a true immersive video exchange experience to CASL innovators. VOCC Edge Units currently are in place at 9 of 10 core CASL partner sites: Oak Ridge, Los Alamos, Sandia and Idaho national laboratories; Massachusetts Institute of Technology; North Carolina State University; University of Michigan; Westinghouse; and the Electric Power Research Institute.
