Representatives of almost 30 conservative, Tea Party and limited government groups, representing millions, will affirm their opposition to the bill that would make E-Verify mandatory for all workers and businesses, according to Kathryn Serkes of Take Back Washington. Last week, the group launched a media campaign and sent a letter to Congress outlining their concerns.
"Many of us are taking some heat for our action, but we stand by it because in no way does it compromise our position against illegal immigration, " said Kathryn Serkes of Take Back Washington. "This is a great opportunity to discuss the negative unintended consequences of well-intentioned actions out of Congress."
The headline in the first paid ad – a full-page in Washington's "Politico" - read:
"Punishing businesses and telling citizens they can't work
is no way to stop illegal immigration…
OR fix the economy
"So why is Congress even thinking about passing
H.R. 2885, the 'Legal' Workforce Act &
universal, mandatory E-Verify?"
Since last week, the coalition has added groups representing at least another 350,000 members across the country. Included in the 29 signatories to the letter and ad are some big names in conservative and Tea Party circles, such as: Tea Party Nation, American Grassroots Coalition, Institute for Liberty, Competitive Enterprise Institute, Rutherford Institute, Gun Owners of America, Taxpayer Protection Alliance, Constitution Alliance, Republican Liberty Caucus, American Freedom Agenda and TheTeaParty.net.
In coming weeks, the group will launch radio ads in targeted Congressional districts, and will hold a national tele-town meeting on immigration.
