Other online proofreading services still take days for results and countless back-and-forth emails of revisions. Traditional services have focused on the premium B2B market for large companies and institutions delivering slow yet costly results for highly specialised fields. This puts it out of reach for everyday writers and students that write an average of 30 essays per year. With 35 Million students in higher education, the US alone amounts to over 1 Billion occasions for proofreading. Adding global English-as-Second-Language students and international business correspondences, the potential market grows exponentially.
Ediket makes proofreading simple and quick. Writers submit their request through the website at an affordable $1 USD per 100 words. Like Uber's on-demand approach, Ediket then matches the request with an in-network, verified native English-language proofreader that best understands the context. For example, a book report on Shakespeare will be revised by an editor with a degree in English Literature. Proofreaders can get to work instantly using the site's built-in document editor specialised for tracking changes—no need for file downloads or word processor programs. On average, submissions are completed under two hours. Proofreaders can then cash out their earnings from finished requests.
The founders of Ediket, Minkyu Kim and Jungwoo Lee, turned their experiences as former international students of George Washington University and Rice University into a startup. Asking friends on campus to proofread papers was a bothersome ordeal when they all had assignments of their own to complete. While serving in the Army at home in South Korea, Kim met other students (turned Ediket team members) with similar experiences; the operating hours of college writing centres never quite meshed with overnight essay writing and required advance reservations with tutors. Jungwoo Lee, who won the third place in the 2011 Microsoft ImagineCup mobile game category, joined Kim as cofounder and CTO. Upon completing military service, Kim and Lee put their college degrees on hold, starting out with funds gained from personal stock trading.
The service resonated with users — last year, Ediket toured Silicon Valley in July and represented Korea at the 2014 Start Tel Aviv competition in September. Since then the satisfied customer base has grown today to span from high school students in rural Korea to tech professionals in Morocco and beyond.
"'Proofreading for all is what Ediket is about," said CEO Minkyu Kim. "We've been in our users' shoes. We know there's the need for a quick and inexpensive second opinion when it comes to writing. Our goal is to become the best place for that, and our users are guiding us on how to make it happen."
