Edison Notifies SDG&E Of Decision To Permanently Retire San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant Focus continues on ensuring adequate energy resources
SAN DIEGO, June 7, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Southern California Edison (SCE), the majority owner and operator of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS), has notified San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) that a decision has been reached to permanently retire SONGS Units 2 and 3 and to seek approval to start the decommissioning activities for the entire facility.
SDG&E has a 20-percent minority ownership interest in SONGS, and, historically, has received 20 percent of its power from the facility.
"Since the units went offline in early 2012, SDG&E's primary concern has been continuing to meet our customers' energy needs as safely and reliably as possible," said Jessie J. Knight, Jr., SDG&E's chairman and chief executive officer.
"With the Sunrise Powerlink now in service and with additional contracted resources, barring any unforeseen system emergency, our region should have adequate power supplies for this summer," Knight said.
As a result of SCE's decision, Sempra Energy and SDG&E today made a Form 8K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
