Effects of Tooth Loss in Seniors and Importance of Maintaining Proper Oral Care
HOUSTON, Jan. 23, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Houston dentist, Dr. Ali Falahat, has noted a recent study on tooth loss in seniors and is highlighting the importance of oral health care in this population. The study, which was performed by UK researchers at the University College London and published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, analyzed associations between tooth loss and overall health in seniors. In addition to highlighting specific connections between missing teeth and health problems, the researchers noted that tooth loss can be a marker for decline in these patients.
Highlights from this study show how essential oral health care is for seniors. According to Medical News Today, "The analysis showed that subjects who had lost all their natural teeth performed around 10% worse in both memory and walking than counterparts with natural teeth." Even after adjusting for confounders such as socioeconomic status and smoking, the researchers found that walking speed was strongly linked to the presence of natural teeth. The researchers themselves said, "Tooth loss could be used as an early marker of mental and physical decline in older age, particularly among 60-74 year-olds." To help reduce late-life decline, older adults should take steps to protect their teeth and gums.
At home, older adults should brush and floss every day. When gum disease risk factors are present, adults should also consider using antimicrobial mouthrinses on a daily basis. Regular dental exam and cleanings are also essential for reducing risks of tooth loss. Gingivitis treatments, such as scaling and root planing, can help stop the progression of gum disease to advanced periodontitis. When periodontitis is involved, patients may benefit from having gum flap surgery or tissue grafting performed.
