WASHINGTON, June 21, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Hudson Institute announced today that Elaine L. Chao, the 24th U. S. Secretary of Labor has joined Hudson as a Distinguished Fellow. At Hudson, Secretary Chao will work on issues related to strengthening the U.S. economy with a focus on employment, labor mobility, international trade, and U.S. competitiveness in a worldwide economy.
"Elaine Chao was extraordinarily effective as one of our nation's longest serving Labor secretaries," said Ken Weinstein, President and CEO of Hudson Institute. "We're honored to add her to our growing policy team. Her unrivaled experience and unique insights will inform her work at Hudson, where she'll lead policy research efforts that aim to restore dynamism and growth to the U.S. economy."
Secretary Chao is the first Asian-American woman to be appointed to the President's cabinet in our country's history. During her tenure, the U.S. Department of Labor improved workplace health and safety standards; focused on increasing the competitiveness of America's workforce; and enforced financial disclosure reporting requirements that gave workers more information on the financial condition of their unions.
Prior to leading the U.S. Department of Labor, Chao was president and CEO of United Way of America, director of the Peace Corps, deputy secretary of the Department of Transportation, chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission and White House Fellow. She also worked as vice president at Bank of America in San Francisco and at Citicorp in New York. Chao received her MBA from Harvard Business School and a degree in economics from Mount Holyoke College. She is the recipient of 35 honorary doctorate degrees. Her website is: www.elainechao.com.
At Hudson, Chao will be joining notable economic experts that include Marie-Josée Kravis, Christopher DeMuth, Irwin Stelzer, former FCC commissioners Harold Furchtgott-Roth and Robert M. McDowell, European economist Brendan Brown, housing and mortgage analyst John Weicher, and energy markets expert John Lee.
