Electric Membership Cooperatives (EMCs) Report Severe Damage and Thousands Without Power
TUCKER, Ga., Feb. 17, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- As of 5 a.m., Georgia's electric membership cooperatives (EMCs) are reporting approximately 134,000 customers in north Georgia without power, up from 64,000 late last night. Last evening and overnight, crews restored power to thousands of customers, but trees continued to fall on power lines causing thousands of additional outages.
The northeast Georgia area has seen severe damage to the electric infrastructure with significant ice accumulation in areas such as Forsyth, Dawson, Lumpkin, Cherokee, Pickens, Towns, Hall, Gwinnett, Jackson and Banks Counties.
EMCs serving these areas have brought in additional EMC crews from other parts of the state and other contract crews to expedite the restoration process with the goal of restoring most EMC customers within 24 hours, conditions permitting.
Customers should report power outages by contacting their local EMC and stay away from downed lines and report them immediately to their local utility or call 911.
Georgia EMC is the statewide trade association representing the state's 41 EMCs, Oglethorpe Power Corp., Georgia Transmission Corp. and Georgia System Operations Corp. Collectively, Georgia's customer-owned EMCs provide electricity and related services to 4.4 million people, half of Georgia's population, across 73 percent of the state's land area.
Note: Another update will be provided at 10 a.m. today.
