EmSeeQ® Locator Device Aids in Returning Lost Spokane Boy with Autism Safely Back Home in Minutes
FRISCO, Texas and SPOKANE, Wash., May 31, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- A 9-year-old boy is now home safe and sound with his family in Spokane, Wash. after becoming lost on the way home from school thanks to the quick thinking of his mother, the police and a life-saving wearable locator device called EmSeeQ® by EmFinders that can quickly locate missing children and adults with cognitive conditions.
Stephanie Lund purchased the EmSeeQ bracelet in October for her son, Jakob, who has Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism that often causes children to wander off or become lost. Lund says Jakob has a history of wandering off for hours at a time, and the bracelet offered a way to help find him quickly and bring him home safely.
When Jakob failed to return home from Whitman Elementary School on Friday, Lund called 9-1-1 and then EmFinders to activate the EmSeeQ bracelet. The device placed a call to 9-1-1 and triggered the E-9-1-1 national emergency location system to transmit information on Jakob's location using advanced cellular signal triangulation technology. His location was immediately displayed on the 9-1-1 dispatcher's screen and guided police to find Jakob 15 blocks away from the school, at the precise location provided by the EmSeeQ. Lund said police located her son in just 10 minutes
"I think it's really important for any parent who has a child with disabilities or even just a regular child because this device is just incredible," Lund said of the EmSeeQ system. "I think it will end a lot of Amber Alerts."
Because EmSeeQ works so quickly, the device not only saves precious time—which could mean the difference between life or death for patients with autism or Alzheimer's disease—but also reduces the manpower and costs associated with the search and rescue effort.
The EmSeeQ product is available in two different styles: a watchband-type device with a traditional buckle, and a clasp-style that requires two hands for removal. The device is activated by EmFinders at the request of the caregiver, but only after the caregiver has completed an initial search for the individual in the immediate area and placed a call to 9-1-1 to report the individual as missing. After receiving the activation command from EmFinders, the EmSeeQ calls 9-1-1 and the wearer's location is provided directly to the dispatcher.
